Mixed Media: Pastels & Encaustics with Lexi

Feb 29, 2020 11am to 5:30 pm

Join me for a fantastic technique filled day of mixed media techniques. Our main focus will be on the basics of chalk pastels and basics of encaustics (beeswax), but there will be so many amazing mediums to enjoy throughout the day.

This is considered a beginner course to both pastels and beeswax, but even if you've done both, I think you'll find fun new ways to explore. Many of my samples are 3-d, however, all of the techniques covered can be applied on loose mixed media/hot press watercolor paper. There is literally no experience required, I will have assorted prints and stamp options available if you're not a big fan of sketching. If you prefer to work in a journal, that's ok, just keep in mind that encaustics can be reheated/melted with a heat tool, which is why I suggest working on loose pages. Once a journal is complete, the encaustic pages can be secured with no possibility of damage.

I will have the following in class for everyone to share: chalk pastels, beeswax, melting pot, encaustic iron, stamps, inks, spray bottles, assorted papers for collaging, wood substrates, toned paper (tan, grey and black), hot press watercolor paper, paints, stains, inks and fixative.

Please bring the following:

  • Stabilo pencil in black Matte Medium (prefer regular or heavy but not fluid)
  • 1" brush to decoupaging
  • painting palette knife
  • heat tool
  • craft sheet
  • assorted vintage book paper, dictionary or sheet music
  • Posca or Molotow acrylic paint pen in white
  • Tim Holtz ruler (or beveled edge ruler for tearing paper)
  • Important - Please bring inspiration photos printed for yourself for your sketching and reference purposes. If you prefer to use your phone, I suggest bringing your charger.
  • *Optional: if you have your own chalk pastels, please feel free to bring them. If you have letter or numbers stamps you think you might like to use, bring them, but I will have a couple sets to share in class.

Sorry, there are no cancellations or refunds. Any refund issued will be in the form of store credit.

Due to the nature of the class, if you are unable to attend, we will be able to provide you with a class kit.
